History of
The Bulldog Club of Greater St. Louis

A very interesting letter written from a man named G. Ed Terrell that was written to Richard Maze. Mr. Maze was listed on the reply letter head showing that he was secretary at that time in BCA. Ed Terrell's letter was dated January 6th, 1957. But like many of us we sometimes get the year wrong when it rolls over the first of each year. The letter starts off to Mr. Maze,

"I need your help". That really gets your attention. It goes on and explains that Mr. Terrell had moved to the St. Louis area from Dallas Texas with a job transfer. Mr. Terrell explains to Mr. Maze that he missed his club and members of the Lone Star Bulldog Club and that one did not exist in St. Louis. He tells Mr. Maze that he has met some fine Bulldoggers such as the Ralph Beahringers, Tom Flanagans, George Kisslingers, Robert Hegges etc.  in the St. Louis area and that they  were eager to get a club started. He states he was assured that he could count on support also from the Bernie Brooks and Dr. H. P. Bockrath
.

He asks Richard Maze, "How does one get the club "off the ground - and what's the next step?" He wrote to Mr. Maze that he would not be satisfied until they had formed the club or have found it absolutely impossible.

He received a very informational letter from Richard Maze dated January 11th 1958. I doubt the mail took a year so I assume Mr. Terrrell letter was actually written Jan. 6th 1958. Mr. Maze's letter told Mr. Terrell to hold organized meetings and elect a chairman and secretary, name the club and have a committee work on a Constitution and By-Laws. Mr. Maze wrote in his letter telling Mr. Terrell to write and announce the formation of this club to The American Kennel Club, and for the club to make an application for membership to the Bulldog Club of America. Mr. Maze explains the holding of Sanctioned Matches and after that the holding of a point show Specialty. Mr. Maze then says to feel free to write again for assistance.

Mr. Terrell then mailed out invitations to people informing them of the first meeting that was February 9th at 2:00 pm at his home.  He wrote that his wife was enthusiastic and promised ample supple of coffee and pastries.

Those present for the first meeting were George and Ann Kisslinger, Bob and Virginia Hegge, Ralph and Mildred Beahringer, Tom and Terry Flanagen, Lloyd and Dorys Bruening, M. F. and Della Mitchell, Bernie Brooks and Ed and Billie Terrell.

The March meeting was held at the home of Bernie Brooks, the minutes were dated the 9th 1958 and these officers were elected: Ed Terrell President, Bernie Brooks, Vice President, and Robert Hegge Secretary/Treasurer. The name of the club would be Bulldog Club of Greater St. Louis. The constitution and by-laws were approved. A list of charter members was asked to be sent to the American Kennel Club. The list I have is Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beahringer, Bernie Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Bruening, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Easley, Mr. and Mrs.Tom Flanagan, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hegge, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. George Kisslinger, Mr. and Mrs. George Martinez, Mr. And Mrs. M. F. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. G. Ed Terrell, Mr. and Mrs. Al Vyver, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yost.

In the July 1958 club colors of Red and white were voted on.

At the August 1958 meeting Virginia Schirmer was named editor of the clubs paper called the Lotta Bull.

The membership list made in December 1958 had 37 members. Each month the club members appeared to have held their meeting the second Sunday of each month at 2:00 pm. That time and date still is what is current today. They always had coffee and cookies and such served.  They always enjoyed a Christmas party and gifts.

Mr Ed Terrell seems to have dropped off an attendance list about 1967. Mr. Beahringer tells me he may have moved with his job.
